The next generation of European Skaters shed light on the future of progression at the 2012 Shop Riot Finals with innovative skating, creativity and technical tricks. Streetmarket’s team out of the Czech Republic edged-out Portugal’s young & hungry team from Ericeira Shop, winning first place and the coveted prize of Kingpin’s upcoming editorial coverage of the team in their home city of Prague.
The weekend event started out Saturday with special qualification rounds that allowed each invited team the chance to skate the street course of Münster’s Skaters Palace on their own, skating their hardest and showing the crowd and everyone in attendance how truly special this unique event is. The judges had the toughest job of the day, tackling the difficult decision of awarding 8 teams the coveted spots in Sunday’s final round.
This high-level session finished with a best-trick contest for riders to showcase their best moves on 2 selected obstacles of the street course. Jacopo Carozzi, from Contest Shop (ITALY) did a couple of gnarly tricks but the judge’s choice was his amazing kickflip transfer to lipslide on the curb cut. On the second obstacle, Sweden’s finest, Fernando Bramsmark from Streetlab Skateshop almost simultaneously landed a Nollie Flip backside Nose blunt slide on the Bank to Ledge. These were unanimously judged to be the best moves of the session, and the 500€ of prize money was split equally to reward both riders.
The high energy ending of the day at Münster’s Skaters Palace lead straight into the night with the Monster Party at Clubschiene Münster. It was a great night, where all the teams had good times, either killing it on the dance floor, or hanging around and having a drink together, sharing their views & experience on skateboarding, congratulating each other for the tricks they’ve landed during the day, and even talking about eventual future invitations in their respective countries: that’s probably one of the greatest things about the amazing concept that is Shop Riot!
On Sunday, the 8 qualified teams were in really good shape, ready to rock for the Quarter Finals of the Vans Shop Riot 2012.
Black Sheep (UK), the winners of last year’s Shop Riot, were literally on fire, with Eddie Belvedere landing an incredible transfer frontside nosegrind on the curb of the driveway, the Germans from Titus Berlin, with Pascal Reif & his big frontside kickflip to flat, were killing it as well, same thing for the Ben-G team from Holland, the Spanish team of Antidot and the Italians from Contest. However, the “battle” format of this contest creates no room for error, and the 2 finalists that fought their way to the top were Czech riders from Streetmarket, skating against the Portuguese kids from Ericeira Shop.
After almost 10 minutes of a crazy session, with such a high standard of tricks, Maxim Habanec, Martin Pek & Lukas Danek from Streetmarket won the first place, leaving the second to the young guns from Portugal’s Ericeira Shop: Afonso Nery, Anibal Martins, Bruno Senra & Tiago Lopes, who ranged in age from 12 to 17 years old!!
This year’s Shop Riot was definitely the beginning of a new era. Along with solid skaters with heavy skills, the future of European Skateboarding showed everyone what kind of incredible riders are coming up!
